According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), cybersecurity is the art of protecting networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access or criminal use and the practice of ensuring confidentiality, integrity and availability of information.

So much of our daily lives rely on technology that this is getting more difficult by the day. Follow these best practices to minimize the risk of a cyberattack.

  1. Keep your software up to date. This includes phones, tablets, computers, etc.
  2. Have a reputable antivirus software installed. If there is an issue, this will help to detect it sooner rather than later.
  3. Don’t reuse the same password for all of your logins.
    a. Adopt a passphrase. Choose one that is easy to remember and contains personal detail that only you would know. NEVER give out your password.
  4. Enable two-factor authentication.
  5. Be suspicious of unexpected emails. Do not allow downloads from websites you’re unsure of. Verify the legitimacy of an email before clicking on anything.
  6. Do not use other people’s devices. Beware of what you log into on an unsecured network.
  7. Back up your data.
  8. Be smart. If something looks too good to be true, it probably is. You are your best defense.
